Think out of Box

Once there lived a merchant in Italy who owing a large sum of money to a rich man. This rich man is very old and ugly, eyed on merchant’s beautiful daughter. So he came with a marriage proposal which indirectly clear all his debt. Both the merchant and his daughter were shocked by the proposal which they denied it smoothly.

As the merchant was not in a position to pay the debt, the rich man came with another option. He will put a black and white pebble into an empty bag. The girl has to pick one pebble from the bag. If she picks a white pebble, then she need not to marry the rich man and her father’s debt will be forgiven. If she picks a black pebble, then she would marry the rich man and her father’s debt will be forgiven. But if she refused to pick any pebble from the bag, then her father will be sent to jail for not repaying the money.

They were standing on a pebble strewn path in the merchant’s garden. Then the rich man bent down and took two pebbles from the ground. As he is picking up the pebbles, the merchant’s daughter noticed that the rich man had picked two black pebbles and kept it in the bag. Then he asked the girl to pick the pebble from the bag.

Suppose if you are in the girl’s place, what will you do? Or if you want to suggest the girl, then what will be your suggestion. There are three possibilities.

1.    The girl should refuse to take a pebble which indirectly sends her father to the jail.
2.    The girl should expose the rich man’s plot which indirectly sends her father to the jail for not paying the debt.
3.    The girl should pick any black pebble from the bag and sacrifice her life in order to save her father from his debt and imprisonment.

The above story was ended like this, which is the fourth possibility which came from the intelligent girl’s mind.

The girl kept her hand in the bag and picked one pebble. Without showing it to the rich man, she acted that it was slipped from her hand. As they were standing on the pebble-strewn path, immediately the pebble was lost among all the pebbles.

“Oh, however, clumsy of Maine,” she said. “But never mind, if you check up on the bag for the one that’s left, you’ll be ready to tell that stone I picked.” Since there is a black pebble inside the bag, it should be assumed as a white pebble which was fell down. And since the moneylender dared not to admit his dishonesty, the girl changed what seemed to be an impossible situation into an advantageous one.

Moral: Every problem has a solution; only thing is to think in a different way.
