Did you ever saw the calendar of September 1752?
NO? Then have a glance.
You can clearly observe that the date was jumped
from September 2nd to 14th. 11 days were missing in the
month of September 1752.
Do you know why? This was the year during which
England shifted from the Roman Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. The Roman
Julian calendar has 11 days more than in a year compared to the Gregorian
calendar. So the then England king ordered to wipe off those 11 days from the
calendar. So the workers worked only 19 days but they paid for 30 days. That’s
how “Paid Leave” was born.
In the Roman Julian calendar, April is the first
month; but in the Gregorian calendar, January is the first month. Even after
the change in the calendar, many people refused to follow the new calendar. They
started celebrating New Year on April 1st only. So the King passed a
royal dictum stating that, the people who are celebrating New Year in April 1st
instead of January 1st are considered to be the FOOLS. From then on,
1st April became the Fool’s Day.
