He was born to a very poor couple in a small village. He studied
only 3rd standard. His father died at the age of 10 which forces him to carry
the family responsibilities. He worked as a dishwasher (servant) to run his
family. At the age of 16, he must be studying in school but he started working
as a cook in a school. This is all one side of a coin in his life.
On the other side, he is a great writer and poet who wrote many
poems in Sambalpuri language. He wrote 4 poems while he is working as a cook. 4
poems were published in the newspaper. His life is so simple that he even
didn’t wear footwear in his entire life. Just a white dhoti and a vest. Based on his life and writing works, BBC made
a documentary. There are 4 Ph.D. papers on him. His work is a case study in
Harvard University. He was also nominated for Nobel Prize for literature in
2008. He was awarded Padma Sri by our President.
He is none other than the renowned poet, social worker from Odisha,
Haldar Nag.
