Once there lived a father along with his three
sons. Before he dies, he thought of dividing his 17 camels as a property to his
children. So he wrote a will and told the elder son to open after his death.
One fine day, the father died and time came to
open the will to know the share of each son. The will of the father stated that,
the eldest son should get 1/2 of 17 camels, middle son 1/3 and youngest son 1/9th
part. As it is not possible to divide 17 into 2 or 3 or 9, they started quarreling and came to a wise man.
The wise man listened patiently and said, I’m
adding one more to the total and now the count is 18 camels. Now he started
sharing the part, according to the father’s will.
Half of 18 = 9. So he gave 9 camels to the elder
son.
1/3rd of 18 = 6. So he gave 6 camels
to the middle son.
1/9th of 18 = 2. So he gave 2 camels
to the youngest son.
This leaves 1 camel which wise man took it back.
MORAL: The attitude of negotiation and problem
solving is to find the 18th camel i.e. the common ground. Once a
person is able to find the common ground, the issue is resolved.
