In 1987,
a 74-year old pedicab driver (rickshaw puller) by the name of Bai Fang Li left
his job and decided to take a rest. He came to his village and saw small
children working in the fields as they were very poor to afford school fees.
By seeing
this, Bai Fang Li went back to the town and restarted his career as pedicab
driver. He took a very small house for less rent, worked 24 hours, ate simple
food, wore a second handed dress for the rest of his life. He gave all of his
earnings to support children who could not afford education.
In 2001,
he drove the pedicab for the last time to a school. Nearly 90 years old, he told
to the students that he couldn’t work any more. He donated a total of $54,958
over a span of 18 years to enable more than 300 poor students to continue with
their studies.
If an
uneducated pedicab driver can support 300 children to go to school, imagine what
you and I can do with the resources we have to bring about positive change in
our world! Hats off Mr. Bai Fang Li
